This presentation looks at two key periods leading up to the present time, focusing on the current state of te reo Māori broadcasting in Aotearoa. It also investigates te reo broadcasting’s capacity for resilience and potential to progress through, arguably, its most important period yet – the present day to 2040, and the bicentenary of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The title recalls the three great waves that carried the waka, Ngātokimatawhaorua, through the Hokianga Harbour’s notorious seas to shore in Aotearoa. Ngātokimatawhaorua was helmed by Kupe’s descendant Nukutawhiti. The presentation will include the incantation performed by Nukutawhiti upon entering the harbour, recalling the bravery, daring, guile, courage and determination of that journey – characteristics required in 2015 to ensure the survival of te reo Māori through the medium of broadcasting in to the future.
